Hustings

Chorley Trades Union Congress (TUC) held a hustings at the Royal British Legion in Coppull on 19th June. Of the various candidates standing in Chorley, only the Green Party candidate, Mark Tebbutt, and the Chorley Trades Union Congress and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) candidate, Martin Powell-Davies, attended, though the other candidates were invited. Mark and Martin had seven minutes each to introduce themselves and their aims for Chorley, should they be elected as Chorley’s MP, followed by questions from the audience.

The audience was made up of TUC members and supporters, Green Party members and supporters, and representatives of several local activism groups, as well as members of the public. The chairperson was Andy Cunningham, Secretary, Chorley & District TUC.

Mark outlined his aims, focusing on the urgency of the climate crisis and the need to fund and rebuild the NHS.

The audience asked questions on a broad range of topics,  including the candidates’ views on the situation in Gaza, the war in Ukraine, anti Islamic public sentiment, WASPI women’s pension compensation, trans rights, and how to engage young voters.

In response, Mark variously spoke about the Green Party’s aim for an immediate bilateral ceasefire in Gaza, continuing to support Ukraine, the Green principles of fairness and inclusivity, and the Green goal of enabling people to self identify should they choose. In mentioning younger voters, Mark emphasised the Green Party promise to fight for a fairer, greener future.

Next hustings on 23rd June.
